What a text actually costs
Pro is $29/mo for 1000 message segments — about 2.9¢ a segment.
A segment is up to 160 characters of plain text; one curly apostrophe, em dash or emoji — the characters a phone inserts for you — drops the whole text to 70, and most emoji count as two of those 70, so 35 fill a segment. A longer text uses more than one. Most announcements are one segment; a long one is two or three, and a text with a curly apostrophe or an emoji in it reaches that at 70 characters instead of 160.
Confirming one number costs 2 segments of the monthly allowance rather than one: the text asking it to reply YES, and the welcome it gets back when it does. Your organization's name goes at the front of that first text, so if it contains a curly apostrophe, an em dash or an emoji the ask alone is 2 or 3 segments instead of 1. Opting in 200 families from your sheets uses 400 of the month's 1000 segments as they confirm, and as much as 1200 — more than the month includes — with a name like that and a welcome at its full length, in which case sending pauses part-way through the drive.
If you use up the month's segments, sending pauses until the allowance resets on the 1st, and nothing is added to your bill. Only text messages stop: neither a spent allowance nor a lapsed plan touches your sign-up sheets, your roster, or the confirmation emails they send. Text-to-join pauses as well — someone who texts your keyword gets no reply until sending resumes — and STOP and HELP are answered regardless of the allowance or the plan.
If you would rather keep sending, each organization has a switch on its billing page. It is off unless you turn it on. With it on, segments past the 1000 keep going out at 4¢ each — up to 1000 more in a month, so at most $40.00 on top of the plan — and we invoice those separately. Nothing is ever added to your bill automatically.

Questions people ask before they buy
Spond, Band and TeamSnap are free. Why pay for this?
They are, and if one of them fits your group you should use it. We don't summarise what they do here — our home page quotes each of them in their own words, with links, and so do the two switch pages. What Causly sends is one thing: a text message to each number on your list that is subscribed and hasn't replied STOP, on the lock screen of the phone that number belongs to, with no app and no account in the way. Use the free apps for chat if your group likes them; use Causly for the message that has to land today.
We already use a sign-up tool.
Then you already know the sheet half, and you may not need us. Two things worth checking on whatever you use now: whether the sign-up page and the confirmation emails your families open carry advertising — Causly's carry none, on any plan — and whether a slot can become a text list without asking everyone for their number a second time.
Do we have to pay to try it?
No. The Free plan is free to use for as long as you like, and you don't need a card to sign up. Sheets, rosters, confirmations, CSV and the print-out all work on it.
Can we use Causly without ever sending a text?
Yes — that's the whole Free plan. Volunteers sign up, each gets an email confirmation up to a daily limit, and you get the roster.
Is it per organization or per person?
Per organization. Add as many coordinators as you like at no extra cost; the 1000 message segments belong to the organization, not to a seat.
What happens to our roster and our families' numbers?
They belong to your organization. Another organization using Causly cannot see them. You can download the roster as a CSV whenever you want, and you can ask us to delete everything. What we collect and who else handles it is written out on our privacy page.
Can people stop the texts?
Always. Anyone can reply STOP to any text and they are out immediately — and not only from you: we record the stop against every entry that number has anywhere on Causly, so another organization here holding the same number stops texting it too. On your roster it sits on that number's entry, so re-ticking the box or adding it to another list does not start the texts again — only a START from that phone clears it. Reply HELP for instructions.
